Kaval Group
Starting Point

Client set out on an ambitious redesign of the entire Kaval Group websites – Starting with the main page (with the full range of restaurants, services etc.), and sub-pages for restaurants and cafés (and their specific offers), as well as featured restaurants, such as Strelec and Lolita.

Ob vstopu na stran so želeli obiskovalcu približati obisk lokala, doseči energijo pričakovanja dobre ponudbe in željo po odkrivanju.

Tech-wise, the websites had to be designed with ease of editing in mind, future additions of elements and content, and of course responsive display on all types of devices.

Design Process

A series of meetings with the Kaval Group marketing department gave me a good idea of what they were trying to achieve – they also provided the examples they were impressed by. At some point, I suggested to try something different and after the first "teaser" I was given the green light. They were very happy with the end result and were looking forward to seeing the new designs.

The design started with the Kaval Group main page, which starts and completes the whole story – It showcases the client’s services by restaurant/cafes category, which can be then explored in depth individually.

After a detailed study of all the locations, I divided them in 3 categories – Featured (Strelec, PEN, and Lolita), restaurants (Kaval, Angel, Pri Trubarjevi mami ...) and cafes (MAO, Špica, Cafe Biennale ...). Each location has a specific story and image, which brings along its own creative guidelines that dictate the overall design. I was helped by the impressions from photographs and on-location visits. To make it quicker to move between the locations, I provided a button in the bottom right corner of each page, where a full list of locations can be found.

The first group – featured locations – was further subdivided and provided with different designs. However, with Lolita I had to take into account that it would expand from one location to at least one or two more (four as of now). This group was the most entertaining, despite the responsibility and the specifics that had to be coordinated on a regular basis.

The second group – restaurants – was designed as typical site that primarily offers visitors a weekly and regular food menu.

The third group –cafes – follows the logic of restaurants, except that it primarily shows events - e.g. the Lily Novy Garden is a beautiful summer concert venue and we wanted to show this online.

As a UX/UI designer, I wrote the design brief(s), drew the wireframes and produced several iterations of prototypes. I communicated regularly with the marketing team and also ran meetings. In the final design versions I demonstrated the application of the creative guidelines in practice and gave reasons why it would be a good idea to follow them.

Already in the conceptual stages, I worked with the front-end team to find technically sophisticated solutions. After submitting the design for implementation, I took care of further adjustments to ensure a consistent execution by reviewing and commenting on the process.
